Sen. Andrew Mathews has cast his vote to revoke Gov. Tim Walz’s peacetime emergency powers, he announced on his Facebook page.
This is Mathews’ second time doing so.
“We have tried to work with the governor to provide support to our businesses and communities and he has repeatedly opposed our proposals,” Mathews wrote on Facebook earlier this month. “Unless he is making the decision under the authority of his emergency powers, he is not supportive of ideas from the legislature.”
He added that he’s convinced Gov. Walz wants to hang on to his emergency powers for as long as possible, which Mathews said is a perilous situation with one person being in charge.
“One person decided that churches could not open, people could see their families,” he added in his Facebook post. “Those calls should be voted on by the legislature.”
He added that according to data, there’s not a big enough emergency for Walz to continue on with his emergency powers.
“Finally, we are not suggesting that we get back to normal but people back home are telling me, 'Senator, let’s get back to freedom.' We know there are risks and challenges – but Americans have always chosen liberty.”
