U.S. Congressman Tom Emmer, who represents Minnesota’s 6th district and has served in Congress since 2015, took to social media on October 2 and 3, 2025, to comment on the ongoing government funding negotiations, attributing blame for a potential shutdown to Senate Democrats.

On October 2, Emmer wrote, "Senate Republicans have the votes to fund the government. Senate Democrats are using the filibuster to BLOCK that vote from taking place. Keep up."

Later that same day, he posted, "This is a Democrat shutdown. You know it. I know it. Heck, even the mainstream media knows it."

On October 3, Emmer further stated, "Chuck Schumer and the Democrats are holding the government hostage to score political points with their far-left base. It’s absurd and it must end. The only thing standing in the way of reopening the government is the Democrat Party."

Emmer’s comments come amid ongoing partisan disagreement over federal budget legislation in Congress. Disputes over spending levels and policy provisions have often led to threats of a government shutdown when consensus cannot be reached between both chambers or parties.

Tom Emmer was born in South Bend, Indiana in 1961 and currently resides in Delano. He holds a BA from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and a JD from William Mitchell College of Law. Before joining Congress in 2015 as Michele Bachmann's successor, he served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2005 to 2011.
