Minnesota State Representative Scott Van Binsbergen addressed recent violent incidents and ongoing fraud concerns in a message to constituents. He expressed his condolences following the deaths of Charlie Kirk, children at Annunciation Church, and Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark.
Van Binsbergen stated, "It’s difficult to put into words the weight of the recent tragedies that have shaken Minnesota and our nation. I am heartbroken, sickened, and angry over the killing of Charlie Kirk, as well as the horrific violence here at home with the murder of children at Annunciation Church, and before that, the assassination of Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark."
He praised Charlie Kirk's influence on American society: "Charlie Kirk has changed America. He had an unwavering belief in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and a willingness to share his message with everyone, especially younger adults." Van Binsbergen also recognized Erika Kirk for her composure after her husband's death: "Erika is an amazing person, who spoke with extraordinary grace and strength following her husband’s tragedy. She reminded everyone about Christianity, forgiveness, and the gospel message. Her words will serve as guide to the nation for years to come."
Reflecting on Kirk's legacy, Van Binsbergen said: "Charlie will be remembered for his deep love of America. He believed in people, freedom, and personal responsibility. He saw America as exceptional...a place where anything is possible."
He cited Romans 12:21—"Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good"—and noted America's role as an example based on Christian values.
Turning to state issues, Van Binsbergen highlighted recent developments in fraud investigations involving autism therapy providers accused of billing for services not provided. Federal prosecutors have charged multiple individuals connected to Medicaid fraud schemes in Minnesota.
A recent report from MPR indicated that federal prosecutors have charged nine people over two weeks for defrauding Medicaid programs in Minnesota. Prosecutors say this is likely only the start of more cases.
Van Binsbergen commented on these developments: "I am serious about clamping down on the gross misuse of tax dollars that is running rampant in our state. Every stolen dollar is money that should’ve gone to kids and vulnerable people who really need help...it chips away at public trust in state programs." He encouraged citizens to report suspected fraud confidentially through MNFraud.com.
Additionally, he announced having co-signed a letter urging federal involvement: “We need your leadership to help confront this crisis head-on by ensuring the investigators, oversight, and accountability are in place to root out fraud and restore trust. Minnesotans deserve to know that taxpayer dollars are protected..."
Van Binsbergen also promoted the House Undergraduate Internship Program for students seeking practical experience in government operations. The program requires interns to work at least six hours per week performing tasks such as research or preparing legislative materials; those meeting requirements receive a weekly stipend.
Applications must be submitted by November 7, 2025.
He closed by encouraging ongoing communication with constituents.
