Wright County’s Sheriff, Sean Deringer, released a statement about current events and the local law enforcement’s response, North Wright County Today reported.
“Like all of you, when I saw the video that captured the death of George Floyd while in custody of Minneapolis Police Officers on May 25, I was shocked and horrified,” Deringer said.
While Deringer is unable to comment on or speak for other law enforcement agencies, he did make some claims about his office.
“My office will embrace that diversity,” Deringer said. “As a community, we need to recognize the issue of systemic racism and come together along the lines of human dignity, understanding, honesty and compassion to create a safe, healthy environment for everyone.”
The members of the county’s office have been required to participate in extensive and ongoing training in topics like de-escalation and conflict management among others, Deringer said, and transparency is valued highly, now and always.
“When I was elected, I took an oath to serve all people,” Deringer said. “I take that oath seriously and will ensure that we continuously look at what we are doing and how we can improve in the future.”
Deringer acknowledged that while the journey will not be easy, the only choice to make at this time is to change for the better.
“I ask our residents, community leaders and organizations to join me in opening these lines of communication, to have meaningful dialogue and bring people together for the common good,” Deringer said.
