The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced on April 17 that Highway 25 will close between John Ause Memorial Drive in Buffalo and Cameron Avenue NE south of Monticello beginning Tuesday, April 21, as a major reconstruction project begins.
The closure is part of an $11.4 million project aimed at improving safety, drainage, and ride quality along a seven-mile stretch of Highway 25. The road will be closed to through traffic until late October, with all lanes expected to reopen in fall 2026.
During construction, traffic will be detoured using Highway 55, County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 12, CSAH 37 and County Road 131. Access will be maintained for residents and businesses within the work zone but temporary hard closures may occur. Motorists are advised to follow local signage and plan extra travel time.
According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s message, “To keep workers safe, follow these tips: Obey posted speed limits – the fine for speeding in a work zone is $300. Stay alert and avoid distractions. Move over and give crews space. Be patient and expect delays. Never enter a road closed with barriers or cones. Expect changing conditions, including lane shifts and equipment.” Real-time travel information is available at www.511mn.org or via their free app.
The project includes reconstructing the highway surface using Stabilized Full Depth Reclamation beginning in July—an approach that requires deep excavation and large equipment—and building three roundabouts as well as making pedestrian and trail improvements.
